Sleeping Dogs and Running

No Matter where I am with Frida, it is so hard to get out of bed when she is in the “nook.”  Sometimes she will lay her head on my knee, take a deep breath and rest in even deeper – like she knows I have to pee and wants to keep me hostage.

I hold it because I want to savor every moment of HER contentment.

I find it fascinating the joy I experience when I watch a dog sleep.  The peace, the trust, the Zen – always fills my heart with calmness.

However, we have no dog door, it is 42 degrees, and the park is a 5-minute walk away.

I don’t move now, hoping she stays settled…one more hour, to get maybe 5 more degrees. 5 degrees can make a difference.

Today, though, she is up with vigor – almost in play mode.

She attacks the lamb toy I bought the day before with a full on, “Let’s do this mom!” Huff, puff and postering.

7am, 41 degrees – off we go to her favorite spot.  It should be noted, this spot has a marker of a benefactor, almost like a gravesite. SUSAN WITTY – I do not make this up. My dog loves to pee on Susan’s grassy front of the marker…she politely poops under a tree, which I am now know is because of a German Shepard I have seen there before – she’s a flirt.

I look across to the reservoir – 5k AIDS Walk AZ today – I registered and  will run virtually later – shit…it is cold….

But, I know, the best move is just get into my running clothes and hit it as soon as Frida is home and treated up.

Speaking of treats, what a treat, the energy of fellow runners is undeniably one of the greatest senses of community. If I see someone in the street running, I always yell… “Go runner go!”

The democracy of Central Park cannot be understated. Yes, I am able to get to there in 5 mins, others can take 35, 45, 55.

However, the way those folks enjoy the park is palpable – for their journey is rewarded as deeply as their efforts to get there.  As it is, I have only gone as far as Susan Witty’s potty spot and reservoir – already I am taking the park for granted. Something I never did when I had to travel from Phoenix.

Monday, an eclipse is coming.  All day in the park Monday to come.

Oh Shit, I need to find eclipse glasses.

I’m Susan

Welcome to Travels with a Chiweenie. From the moment I received Frida as a nine-week-old puppy, I dreamt of retiring and traveling the world with her. I retired in 2020, from education, during a pandemic…the pandemic wasn’t part of my retirement plan. I begin this journey with you, sharing the life as seen from a five-year-old Frida’s perspective and my mishaps. I hope you enjoy.
